Perhaps the most welcome feature about this book is the captions, in the compilation of which the author has been assisted by Joe Curran, son of the last CDRJC manager, Bernard Curran. He has been able to put names to faces and this brings the excellent selection of photographs to life, and reminds us that the Donegal was run by men who were often of great character. It was the staff who kept the Donegal alive and fighting in the decade these photographs were taken. Some of the photographs show their age - some have faded. But the function of a book like this is to tell us what the Donegal was like and this book succeeds admirably. The men and machines, the buildings and the customers are all portrayed in a balanced manner. IRRS No.139 |

Listowel & Ballybunion Railway |
· A.T. Newham, M. Foster · Oakwood Press · 1967, 1971, 1989 (enlarged) · 112 Pages · 0-85361-376-1 |
· Dedication · Acknowledgements · Setting The Scene · The Permanent Way · Locomotives, Coaches, Wagons And Stations · Operation Of The Line · 1888-1924 · Acknowledgements To First Edition · Appendices |
One of a series of Locomotion Papers from this publisher in which Mr Newham has told the story with his usual accuracy and attention to detail. In concise fashion he has set down the main technical data of the A-shaped permanent way, and the “Siamese twin” locomotives, coaches and wagons. He has described and illustrated the quaint “level crossings” (which were not level at all), and the highly ingenious “points” and shunting system. To those not acquainted with the Lartigue principle it will make fascinating reading. The 1989 issue is an update of Newham’s 1967 work by Michael Foster. Well produced, with photographs, maps and drawings. |
LMS In Ireland |
· Mark Kennedy · Midland Publishing · 2000 · 96 Pages · 1-85780-097-4 |
· Introduction · Broad Gauge Routes · The Narrow Gauge Lines · The LNWR Connection · At Peace And War · By Land, Sea And Air · The Post-War Era |
The book follows the usual format from this publisher. The writer takes us on a trip over the LMS, both broad and narrow gauge, describing principal stations, and illustrating each with well chosen and reproduced photographs enhanced by informative captions. Locomotive pictures are plentiful, but not to the exclusion of other aspects of the LMS scene such as architecture, signalling and the non-railway features of that large company. Those accustomed to the narrow confines of the modern railway will be amazed at the range of activities of the LMS in Ireland. Tourism, hotels, road transport and shipping, even air travel, all were part of this multi-faceted company, as the last ten pages of the book make clear. This is an excellent book, full of interest, which should be on every enthusiast’s shelves. One can only hope that a second volume will appear before too long. RPSI No.47 |

Locomotives & Train Working In The Latter Part Of The 19th Century, Vol. 6 (The Irish Companies) |
· E.L. Ahrons · W. Heffer & Sons · 1954 · 77 Pages |
· Introduction · Illustrations · Great Southern and Western Railway · Waterford, Limerick and Western Railway · Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway · Midland Great Western Railway · Great Northern Railway (Ireland) |
Ahrons travelled extensively in the 1880’s, 90’s and the early years of the 20th century. These are his notes of journeys made at the end of the Victorian era, and are a goldmine of social history, as well as a magical insight into railway operation at this time. An absolute treasure of a book, which reveals how railways then operated. Ahrons has a great deal of practical knowledge, and this book is a valuable archive from a knowing author. Includes some of the earliest logs of Irish loco performance ever published. Long recognised as a standard work, even if the text is at times rather patronising. |

This is the most ambitious production yet from Colourpoint or the author - an A4 hardback on quality paper. In addition to some 65 diagrams, there are 36 colour photographs and a vast number in monochrome. Reproduction is of a very high standard, especially when one considers that some were taken over 100 years ago. The book is primarily a history of the engines of the GNR and its constituent companies and also includes details of the companies themselves and their locomotive engineers, going back as far as 1836. Understandably, there is not so much information about some of the very earliest locomotives but, between the narrative and the appendices, there is as much detail - short of counting rivets - about every locomotive that ran as anyone would wish. There is a chapter on tenders, one on dieselisation up to the Hunslet era, and one on preservation, in addition to details of what went where and what became of it when CIÉ and the UTA took over. Although there are references to the capabilities of various locomotives, one will not find here stirring tales of exploits of speed or haulage or railway skulduggery, though there is a mention of Newry shed being told that a favourite engine was to be scrapped, whereupon they promptly swapped its number for another less highly thought of - after all, they had trains to run and one dead engine was as good as another to the scrap man! The book is not cheap but you may never again get so much all in one volume. RPSI No.46 |

London & North Western Railway Thirty Foot One Inch Carriages |
· Phillip Milward · London & North Western Railway Society · 2001 · 0-9515490-9X |
Two pages and five photographs specifically of the Irish vehicles, plus a paragraph about the preservation of one of the composites. |
Over the past few years, the “Premier Line” society has produced a series of monographs on various aspects of the old company, and the latest covers its large fleet of 30 foot 1 inch six-wheel coaches, including the seven thirds, four full brakes and two coupes built for the Dundalk, Newry & Greenore Railway. Except for the last mentioned, these were variants of standard mainline stock, so some of the sections on those vehicles are also relevant. Photographic reproduction is good, and there are also excellent general arrangement and detail drawings, which should provide plenty of information for modelling the thirds ands vans, but a bit of extrapolation will be needed for the composites. Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway |
· J.I.C. Boyd · Bradford Barton · 1984 · 96 Pages · 085153-447-3 |
· Introduction · Captioned Photographs · Locomotive Outline Drawings · Carriage And Wagon Outline Drawings |
This volume gives such valuable and interesting things as drawings of the main classes of locomotives, carriages and wagons, as to form an excellent picture of the equipment with which the L&LSR carried out its heavy duty of serving a large part of Donegal. The ample illustrations are almost all of high quality, and most of the “action” pictures are by the author. They well show what a railway this was; its territory had made it costly to build, and the expense of operation was a matter for much thought all its life. With its map of the line’s area, and illustrations of posters, timetables, station layouts, etc., the book can be highly recommended. IRRS No.94 |

Lost Railways Of Co. Antrim |
· Stephen Johnson · Stenlake Publishing · 2002 · 48 Pages · 1-84033-193-3 |
· Introduction · Ballyclare Junction - Ballyclare · Cookstown Junction - Toome Bridge · Ballymena - Larne Harbour · Ballyboley Junction - Doagh · Ballymena– Parkmore And Retreat · Ballymoney - Ballycastle · Portrush - Giant’s Causeway · Closed Stations On Lines Still Open |
This book consists of black and white photographs (one per page) with accompanying captions. It is laid out on a line by line basis and deals with the portions of closed lines, both standard and narrow gauge, within the county of Antrim, and with closed stations on existing lines therein. Inevitably, the lines which were more scenic and which survived the longest have most photographs, i.e. Giant’s Causeway, whereas the Parkmore and Retreat lines only have shots taken at Ballymena. A large number of the photographs are by H.C. Casserley and are, as one would expect, of good quality. A few of the others, however, are very poor reproductions. |
|
Lost Railways Of Co. Derry |
· Stephen Johnson · Stenlake Publishing · 2002 · 48 Pages · 1-84033-199-2 |
· Introduction · Toome Bridge - Magherafelt And Cookstown · Magherafelt - Macfin · Magherafelt - Draperstown · Magilligan - Magilligan Point · Limavady Junction - Dungiven · Desertone Halt - Londonderry Victoria Road · Portstewart Tramway · Strabane - Londonderry Foyle Road · Londonderry Middle Quay - Tooban Junction · Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners · Closed Stations On Lines Still Open |
The format is exactly the same as the Co. Antrim book, right down to the number of pages, and the same comments apply. As before, every line gets a mention, even the short-lived line to Magilligan Point even though no photographs are available of it. Photographic quality is variable. |

Lost Railways Of Co. Down And Co. Armagh |
· Stephen Johnson · Stenlake Publishing · 2002 · 48 Pages · 1-84033-176-3 |
· Introduction · Belfast Queen’s Quay - Ballynahinch And Newcastle · Comber - Donaghadee · Ardglass Junction - Ardglass · Scarva - Banbridge · Knockmore Junction - Newcastle · Bessbrook - Newry · Goraghwood - Warrenpoint · Warrenpoint - Rostrevor · Goraghwood - Armagh · Armagh - Castleblaney · Portadown - Tynan · Portadown - Vernersbridge · Closed Stations On Lines Still Open |
Another in the series of ‘Lost Railways’ which follows exactly the format of the others, including the poor photographic reproduction. In this case there are possibly more photographs which have been seen in print before. |

Lost Railways Of Co. Tyrone And Co. Down |
· Stephen Johnson · Stenlake Publishing · 2002 · 48 Pages · 1-84033-200-X |
· Introduction · Clones - Strabane · Vernersbridge - Omagh · Bundoran Junction - Bundoran · Dungannon - Cookstown · Fintona Junction - Fintona · Tynan - Maguiresbridge · Victoria Bridge - Castlederg · Strabane - Londonderry Victoria Road · Enniskillen - Belcoo & Blacklion |
Probably the saddest book in the ‘Lost Railways’ series in that there is no section ‘Closed Stations On Lines Still Open’. Apart from that, the format is the same, with a selection of photographs of varying quality. A disappointment is the photograph of Sixmilecross station on the GNR Derry Road which is virtually indistinguishable behind trees and bushes. Likewise, there is no picture of Beragh station which like its neighbour was well photographed. |

Luggage Labels Of Ireland |
· Trefor David · Railway Print Society · 1984 · 28 Pages |
Railways listed alphabetically by company name |
This is an early effort to identify and record the Irish luggage labels and classify the various examples of each company. Of course many have come to light since the publication of this book, but it is informative enough to advance one’s knowledge of the subject. As the title suggests, it is a rather specialist publication and is based on a series of articles the author produced for this Society’s newsletter. The text features a brief history of each of the Irish railway companies which used luggage labels, plus details of the type, style and dimensions of the labels. There are also six pages showing around 70 examples of labels. |
