IRISH SHELL
4 WHEEL DIESEL SHUNTER No.23
BUILT BY : F.C. HIBBERD (WORKS NO. FH3509)
BUILT : 1951
WITHDRAWN : 1971

No. 23 was Ireland's last privately owned broad gauge locomotive.  She was used by Irish Shell at their Alexandra Road premises in Dublin for shunting oil tank wagons.  For many years she was the slightly underpowered, although much loved diesel shunter at Whitehead. Since the arrival of the Carlow diesel back into traffic, the increasingly unreliable No.23 has been relegated into the carriage shed, where she awaits the attentions of a skilled diesel engineer. Nicknamed at Whitehead as "The Planet".
